Facing charges for inciting unrest during the recent communal violence in central Myanmar, Federation of Students Unions committee member Ye Min Oo was taken to Kyauktada Township Court in western Yangon on the morning of Tuesday, April 23.

His lawyer, Aung Thein, said that Ye Min Oo has now been additionally charged under Section 153(A) of the Myanmar Penal Code for “inciting the public”.

“We don’t know why the court has increased the charges against him,” said the lawyer.

Ye Min Oo, 26, was originally charged on April 4 under Section 505(B), accused of “committing an action that could incite people to commit an offence against the state or public tranquility,” a criminal offense that carries a maximum prison sentence of two years.

Later charges were filed against him under Section 153 (A), which under the original text of the 1860 Penal Code is listed as “Promoting enmity between classes”.

Tuesday’s hearing was Ye Min Oo’s fifth appearance in court about the case.
