Speaking at a conference to mark the opening of media accreditation for the event at Yangon's Traders Hotel, Sushent Palakurthi Rao, head of Asia for the World Economic Forum, said “The summit is on one hand about Myanmar, but also about the integration of Myanmar as a member of ASEAN and as a future chair of ASEAN.”

The event will see 1,000 of the world's leading business leaders, academics and social policy makers come Myanmar to discuss job creation, social opportunities and entrepreneurship in the region.

When asked by Mizzima about the timeliness of hosting this summit in the light of ongoing ethnic conflicts in Myanmar, Palakurthi Rao said that “We also will touch upon these sorts of issues.”

He said that there would be over 15 councils taking part who would be discussing topics, such as ethnic conflicts, throughout the event.

The summit will take place from June 5-7. A Young Global Leaders Annual Summit will also run from June 2-7 where 300 young global leaders from around the world from more than 60 countries will gather for a series of debates and seminars in Yangon.
