The first Yoma Yangon International Marathon kicks off from People’s Park in Rangoon this Sunday.

A thousand participants from around the globe are expected to participate in the 42km, 10km and 3km races; the Elite Category will see world top athletes compete for a US $13,400 prize.

“International marathons bring people from all over the world together. These people share the ideals of peaceful competition and the importance of a healthy lifestyle,” said David Shin, of event organizer Sporting Republic. “The marathon itself enhances the image of the hosting city.”

Proceeds from race entries will be donated to the event's official charities: World Vision Myanmar, Muslim Free Hospital and Medical Relief Society, Myanmar Christian Fellowship of the Blind, Mingalar Youth Development Parahita School, and Parahita Training School for Boys by the Department of Social Welfare.

Serge Pun, chairman of title sponsor Yoma Strategic Holdings, said, “I just want to see the participants enjoy the day and really take in the surroundings of this wonderful city.”
