Rangoon to get new luxury hotel

“We have heard that the Taw Win Family Co Ltd will open a hotel on Pyay Road, which is the main road in Yangon city,” said a spokesperson from the Myanmar Hotelier Association.

The 500-room hotel will be built on the fourth to eighth floors of the existing Taw Win Centre.

“We will set the hotel at four-star level standard and invest at least US $50 million in this project,” said Ko Ko Htwe, chairperson of Taw Win Family Co, who also said that the company have spent the past two weeks drawing up plans for the project.

The Taw Win Family Co is currently constructing the largest shopping centre in Rangoon. The company previously worked on affordable, hire-purchase housing projects in Rangoon and Mandalay.

The new hotel will be a welcome addition to Rangoon's scant hotel market, which is struggling to meet the demands of growing tourism. Government statistics released last week show that a record one million tourists visited the country in 2012—a 30 percent rise from the 820,000 visitors the year before.

“As of January 22, 2013, there were 164 hotels in total in the Yangon Hotel Zone owned by both national and foreign investors”, said Yan Win, chairman of the Yangon Hotel Zone.

Official figures show that there are 787 hotels across the country for tourist purposes—just 23 of these are rated with four or five stars.

Prices at hotels and guest houses have gone up in some cases by 300 percent in Rangoon due to the lack of rooms. Meanwhile, poor infrastructure and transportation continues to limit options outside the former capital.
