Accompanied by the government’s chief peace negotiator Aung Min, and Ministers Soe Thein and Khin Yi, the President congratulated the KNU’s new chairman, Gen. Mutu Say Poe, who arrived in the capital with his colleagues KNU General-Secretary Saw Kwe Htoo Win, Secretary-2 Saw Mahn Mahn, and Central Executive Committee members Saw Roger Khin, Mahn Nyein Maung and Saw Hla Tun.

“U Thein Sein reiterated the government's commitment to bringing about lasting peace during his term of office, called for cooperation on common ground for granting equal constitutional rights to all nationalities despite political differences, and stressed the need to grasp the chance to build up a society where eternal peace prevails,” a statement said on the President’s website on Monday.

The KNU has not yet released a statement.

According to the Presidential announcement, the new KNU Chairman “expressed KNU's strong desire to build peace on ceasefire and negotiation, guaranteeing that KNU has no plan to reverse.”

Mutu Say Poe also reportedly raised the matter of the ongoing conflict in Kachin State.

Other issues reportedly discussed were: the resettlement of homeless Karen people; the granting of citizenship to displaced Karens; the rule of law; and sustainable development.
