Burmese govt to allow daily newspapers


Burma’s Ministry of Information announced on its website on Friday that daily newspapers will be permitted as from April 1.

Weekly journals for sale at a news stand in Rangoon. It said that any Burmese national wishing to publish a daily newspaper should submit an application in February, and that the newspapers could be printed in any language.

This will be the first time Burmese will have had an opportunity to buy daily newspapers since 1964. The print media operating mainly out of Rangoon mostly sells weekly journals at present.

As part of his government’s package of reforms, President Thein Sein promised sweeping changes to media laws and censorship procedures.
