Chinese doctors provide free eye surgery

(Mizzima) –  A 12-member Chinese medical team offered free eye surgery in Rangoon on Tuesday, focused on helping cataract patients.

The chairman of the Myanmar Alinyaung [Brightness] Foundation (MAF), Aung Than Win and China Foundation for Peace and Development official Bair Wei inaugurated the project at the Myodaw Medical Center.

Aung Than Win said the joint venture includes a long-term program with the Chinese side to promote exchange in eye treatment expertise and experience. The eye treatment center will train Burmese medical staff and become a medical care center, which will provide free treatment to more than 1,000 cataract eye patients annually.

The first China-Burma “Paukphaw Deep Friendship” activities also cover establishment of a “China-Myanmar Eye Treatment Center,” the donation of 100 sets of laptop computers to 10 primary schools and a staging of cultural performances.

In the last trip of the Chinese medical team in May 2011, 248 cataract eye patients benefited from the free medical service.
