Aung San Suu Kyi will meet with Burmese minister on Friday

New Delhi (Mizzima) – The Burmese government Labour Minister Aung Kyi will meet with opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi on Friday in a continuation of a dialogue that both sides have described as “productive,” according to Rangoon sources.

I think the news is likely to be true.”

Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Minister Aung Kyi met with Suu Kyi at a government guesthouse in Rangoon on July 25 for the first time since her release from house arrest late last year.

Both sides described the meeting as constructive but details about the issues discussed were not disclosed.

There have been subtle signs that the government is cautiously beginning a dialogue with Suu Kyi after refusing to meet with her for years. She has been invited to take part in a government meeting on the economy and poverty in the near future. Likewise, so far there has been no opposition to Suu Kyi traveling outside of Rangoon.

She made a personal pilgrimage to Bagan last month, and she is scheduled to travel to Bago on Sunday in what has been described as an organizational meeting. NLD representatives met with government officials recently regarding her trip, and the officials said the government would not provide her security, but no other objections appeared to have been raised.

Aung Kyi, no relation, was appointed as a liaison minister under the previous military regime, and he has met with the Nobel Prize peace laureate nine times since 2007.
