NLD-affiliated charity school moves to ‘squatters quarters’ in Rangoon

New Delhi (Mizzima) - Forced out of its present location by the authorities, Mom’s Home, an NLD-affiliated charity school in North Okkalapa Township in Rangoon, moved into a ‘squatter’s quarters’ on Tuesday.

With the help of the NLD, the charity school bought the land for 1.2 million kyat (about US$ 1,518).

The school moved from Thumarlar Street to land located near Middle School No. (6) on Mudita Street in Quarter No. (2) in the same township, said Thida Swe, a school official.

‘We bought land in a squatters’ quarter. The thatch roof is supported by posts’, she said. ‘The school building is not ready. We did not get even one day to move. So, we had to move immediately in the rain’, she said.

The school was unable to find a more suitable location because the authorities threatened potential landlords by saying their building would be sealed off if they rented to the charity school.

There are five volunteer teachers and 40 students at the school. The students are graduate students, university students and high school students. The school provides Basic English Language and grade 9 and 10 courses.

There are two other Mom’s Home charity schools located at No. 548, Maykha Road, 14th Ward, Hlaingtharya Township; and at No. 26, Marga Road, North Okkalapa Ward 2, North Okkalapa Township.
