Nine victims of railway bombing recovering

Chiang Mai (Mizzima) – Nine victims injured in a bomb explosion on a Mandalay-Naypyitaw express train on Wednesday have been transfered to Naypyitaw Hospital, according to staff at Tatkon Township People’s Hospital.

A bomb went off on an express train on Wednesday as it traveled between Shwe Station and Sinthay Station in Tatkon Township. In this file photo, passengers wait on a train at the Tatkon Township station. Photo: MizzimaOne woman and a man, both from Thazi, died in the blast.

The injured were transferred under instructions from senior officials in Naypyitaw, sources said.

‘These injured have been out of danger since last night. But they were transferred to a better 1,000-bed hospital with the cars arranged for them by our bosses’, a senior official at the hospital told Mizzima.

The nine injured are farmers from Meiktila, Phyu, Thazi, Katha and Kyaukgyi. Injured by bomb shrapnel and splinters, they underwent operations on Thursday, said a doctor at Naypyitaw Hospital.

‘One of them was in critical condition yesterday but he is out of danger now after the operation. The rest of them sustained only minor injuries in their legs, hands, etc. We had to remove the splinters from their wounds by operation but these are not serious injuries’, she said.

All nine are expected to be discharged within the week.

Officials said the bomb exploded while the train was traveling between Shwe Station and Sinthay Station in Tatkon Township. It went off in an ordinary class coach, the third behind the locomotive engine.

‘The bomb blast ripped off the roof of the coach, but it did not overturn. The coach was detached from the express train at Tatkon Station and it has been sent to Pyinmana Station’, a source at Tatkon Station told Mizzima.

The bomb blast coincided with US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Joseph Yun’s visit to Naypyitaw for a meeting with senior leaders of the new Burmese government.

On Thursday, a bomb exploded at a telephone exchange near a police station in No. 4 Ward in Myawady on the Thai-Burmese border. No one was injured in the blast.
