Brigadier General Kyaw Kyaw Tun appointed Naypyitaw police chief

Chiang Mai (Mizzima) – At a time when the Burmese police force is changing, the new government has appointed Brigadier General Kyaw Kyaw Tun, the deputy commander of the Rangoon Command, as police chief in Naypyitaw, the capital.

Brigadier General Kyaw Kyaw Tun, who has also served as  tactical operation commander in the Northern Command, is a graduate of the 23rd Intake of the Defence Services Academy.

Observers say that the Burmese police force overall is undergoing a change, in which the police are coming into their own.

‘In the past, the army deeply influenced the police force’, said Aung Kyaw Zaw, a Burma analyst. ‘Especially in the Special Branch police, because the army controlled the police force’.

He said the police are now taking more responsibility for the primary tasks of the police.

‘If the new regulations are obeyed, the police will have more power than before. In the past, the army could interfere in police affairs’, he said.
