NLD group donates blood to mark Suu Kyi’s release

New Delhi (Mizzima) – About 90 National League for Democracy youth-wing members and supporters of party leader Aung San Suu Kyi in Rangoon and Mandalay donated blood yesterday, marking a month since Suu Kyi’s release from house arrest.

yangoon-blood-hospitalNLD Blood Donors’ Association (Rangoon Division) director Nyi Nyi told Mizzima: “After aunty’s [Suu Kyi’s] release, we donated blood in every Tuesday. We’ve supplied more than 200 blood bottles including this occasion within the month. Not only NLD members but also lawyers and political novices donated blood.”

More than 50 donors in Taikgyi, Apyauk and Mingala Taungnyunt townships in Rangoon Division and 45 in Mandalay gave blood at blood banks and hospitals in Rangoon and Mandalay this morning. Fifteen bottles went to the National Blood Centre in Rangoon, eight went to the North Okkalapa Hospital, two to Thanlyin Hospital and 25 to banks and hospitals in Mandalay.

NLD vice-chairman Tin Oo met some of the donors at party headquarters in Bahan Township, Rangoon yesterday afternoon to thank them and Suu Kyi would meet the donors soon, Nyi Nyi said.

Similarly, on November 13, the day Suu Kyi was released from seven continuous years of house arrest, the donors’ association gave 40 bottles to Rangoon Children’s Hospital and split 32 bottles between the National Blood Centre and Sanpya Hospital. Since Suu Kyi’s release, the association has donated about 60 bottles each Tuesday.

On November 23, NLD youth members, independent candidates Win Ko Ko Win and Win Cho, students, doctors, retired military officers and Gayunar Blood Donors’ Association members gave 19 bottles to Mingalardon Military Hospital No. 2.

The NLD association was formed by NLD youth-wing members from South Dagon Township last year. Currently, many township-level such donors’ associations have been formed in many townships in Mandalay Division.
