Guild writes off ‘violent’ actress over talks snub

New Delhi (Mizzima) – Burmese writers and journalists have denounced actress Htet Htet Moe Oo, who allegedly slapped a reporter in the face, for failing to appear at negotiations with the plaintiff, a national writers’ guild said in a statement.

Burma Writers and Journalists Association, based in Rangoon, met 7 Day News Journal reporter Aye Thu San on May 23 and the actress on May 26, separately, after the journal registered a complaint about the actress’ alleged assault, according to a statement from the association yesterday.

The association had wanted Htet Htet Moe Oo to apologise and negotiate with the reporter but she failed to attend an appointment for talks, it said.

“Though Burmese writers and film artists should respect each other, she behaved very rudely towards the reporter, against Buddha’s teachings, and did not accede to the request to negotiate,” the association’s secretary using the pen name, Ko Ko, said. The association therefore “condemns the behaviour of actress Htet Htet Moe Oo”.

Though 7 Day News had on May 21 lodged a complaint against the actress with the Burmese Film Association (BFA), the body had yet to reply, an editor told Mizzima.

The lawsuit came after Htet Htet Moe Oo slapped reporter Aye Thu San during an interview at the Sedona Hotel in Rangoon. The latter had apparently asked some probing questions about the actress’ private life.

Mizzima was unable to reach the actress and the writers’ association secretary declined to provide contact details.
