US ‘deeply concerned’ by Kachin civilian deaths

The US ambassador to Burma, Derek Mitchell, says he is “deeply concerned” about the recent civilian deaths that resulted from an artillery attack by Burmese government forces on the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO) stronghold of Laiza.

Mitchell called for both the Burmese army and the KIO to “stop the violence” in the northern Burmese region, while acknowledging that “mistrust is deep” between the two sides.

“We strongly oppose any actions that harm or threaten to harm civilians,” Mitchell said in comments released by the US Embassy in Rangoon on Thursday.
