Thein Sein in Thailand for Dawei talks this week

Burmese President Thein Sein will travel to Thailand on Wednesday, November 7, to meet with Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and a Thai government delegation to discuss plans for the US $50 billion Dawei deep-sea port in southern Burma, which both countries are developing.

Speaking to The Bangkok Post, Thailand’s deputy government spokesperson Chalitrat Chandrubeksa said that discussions over the two-day meeting will cover three main issues: the development of the deep-sea port; plans for a 33-megawatt power plant and transmission cables as part of the Dawei project; and construction of a 132-km road linking the sea-port to the Thai-Burmese border.

The Kachin’s last stand
Since October this year, Burma has been in a state of civil war, with fighting between Burmese military and armed ethnic rebels. The ruling junta started a crackdown on these armed groups.
