Torrential rain hits Hinthada

New Delhi (Mizzima) – Heavy rain in Hinthada Township in Irrawaddy Region for two straight days has inundated many neighbourhoods causing heavy flooding and closing a middle school and a market.

The state-run newspaper New Light of Myanmar reported on Thursday that rain totaled 9.12 inches in the Hinthada-Tagondine area and 6.58 inches in Hinthada proper.
“Myawaddy Quarter has been flooded. Middle School No. 1 was closed yesterday,” an official from the Hinthada Township Immigration office told Mizzima on Thursday.
Fifty-one families totaling 234 people have taken refuge at Yadanarpon Buddhist Monastery and residents have provided food packages, the official said.
“The roads were covered with water for two-and-half feet,” said a resident.
